Learning guide 03

Common IR device pathways

The same functional sequence appears across vascular and nonvascular procedures, even when the individual tools change.

1 · Access

Create controlled entry into the vessel, duct, collecting system, organ, or collection.

2 · Preserve access

Secure a guidewire or catheter position so the initial route is not lost.

3 · Establish a platform

Use a sheath, dilator, guide catheter, or supportive wire to create a stable working channel.

4 · Reach and position

Select, navigate, or cross toward the target using progressively more specialized devices.

5 · Perform the primary task

Drain, sample, dilate, embolize, retrieve, ablate, stent, or otherwise treat the target.

6 · Finish

Remove or leave the intended device, achieve hemostasis, and secure external components.
