Caval embolism filter

Three-panel learning framework
What am I looking at?
Cone-, umbrella-, or tulip-shaped metal filter with anchoring legs, seen in the infrarenal IVC.
What does it do, and where will I see it?
Caval filter deployed to trap lower-extremity emboli and reduce pulmonary embolism when anticoagulation is contraindicated, has failed, or must be interrupted. Typical procedural contexts include PE prophylaxis in patients who cannot be anticoagulated; retrievable-filter placement and later removal.
What most clearly distinguishes it from similar devices?
The IVC filter is the implanted thromboembolic-protection device itself; it should be distinguished from the dedicated delivery system used for deployment and the retrieval sheath used for removal.
