Recognition, context, and distinction

01

What am I looking at?

Visual recognition

Platform components include bone-access cannulas, inflatable bone tamps, and a pistol-grip cement-delivery system with clear tubing and cartridge; the pictured Kyphon™ CDS is the cement-delivery component.

02

What does it do, and where will I see it?

Use & procedural context

Provides percutaneous vertebral-body access, cavity creation with an inflatable bone tamp during balloon kyphoplasty, and controlled radiopaque PMMA cement delivery to stabilize selected painful pathologic vertebral compression fractures.

03

What most clearly distinguishes it from similar devices?

Key distinctions

Balloon kyphoplasty inflates and removes an intraosseous balloon before cement deposition; vertebroplasty places cement without balloon cavity creation. Both differ from bone biopsy, which primarily obtains tissue rather than stabilizing a fracture.
